Red alert!!

Red Cap Action

I have noted previously my obsession for hats and I have a certain favorite red one that I can't seem to get off my head... Even going to the extreme of buying a back up replica in the awful event I lost the original!! My obsession has obviously rubbed off on my sidekick  Darby as well and when he spotted a red cap the other day, he just had to have it!! (lucky for me it was on sale!) The color red has been my "color" since my life change in 2010, becoming dispersed throughout my house in bits and pieces,from kitchen appliances, rugs, cushions. Even the wooden love heart that adorns my entry. I went to my friend google, to find out why this may be so.... psych analysis of myself with colors...."Red has more personal associations than any other color. Recognized as a stimulant, red is inherently exciting and the amount of red is directly related to the level of energy perceived. Red draws attention and a keen use of red as an accent can immediately focus attention on a particular element."How the color red affects us physically

• Increases enthusiasm
• Stimulates energy and can increase the blood pressure, respiration, heartbeat, and pulse rate
• Encourages action and confidence
• Provides a sense of protection from fears and anxiety

All sounds pretty reasonable to me and sums up how I feel (I can blame the color red on my energy.. not the amount of caffeine I am  consuming, and a good excuse to tell my Doctor next time my blood pressure is taken!) ... So you could say I was pretty excited when we walked into a Pillar of salt in Richmond, surrounded by all things red... heaven!! There were touches of it everywhere.. Including glamorous shining red cups (and Darby and I in  our little red hats!) The staff were so lovely!! Even happy enough to take a picture of us in our matching attire with the red cups. I do believe we looked incredibly dorky...or well just downright adorable! Kids and parents dressed alike never gets old, maybe weird though!!
 Pillar of Salt is not on my "100", so I didn't exactly tick one off my list,  but I'm positively sure that it will be in 2012's, so you could say I was before my time! (oh and I had read about it in the Age Good Cafe guide!)

Our coffee experience, although short, was very sweet.. we indulged in a coconut raspberry slice that was eaten up in a flash! (From a quick glance the rest of the menu looked downright delicious as well) My coffee was lovely... Another cafe using 5 senses (they seem to be popping up everywhere and slowly becoming a real favorite of mine. My Soy cappuccino  had a  strong crema and a super smooth and luxurious finish! It was just what I needed as I was about to embark on a quick (yeah right) late afternoon shopping trip to Ikea to buy photo frames! Maybe coffee wasn't such a great idea...a shot of tequila may have made it more palatable!

On my way out  I even managed to snag the last business card... coffee dust and all, very kind of the barista to give it to me!! Ill be back here soon for a little more red therapy!! After all its good for the soul!

Oh and I stayed true to my word.. I did manage a quick trip around hell (Ikea) out of there in 20 minutes.. has to be a record... and with a tired and grumpy Darby too!

Red Cap Action and Sunshine
at the Corner Shop - yarraville!

A JavaJane coffee tour..... all aboard!!

 

It seems as though I have been  stalled at 62 cafes for a couple of weeks now.. so its time I get myself back out there and tasting new coffee and also crossing places off my Melbourne coffee review 100  list... With the recent release of the Age Good cafe guide , my eyes have been opened to a whole other spectrum of new places to visit (and drink from), whilst this is fantastic and the book is now constantly in my bad and already looking  well loved), it is also distracting me from my goal.... so I'm getting back on the horse ... so to speak and will start by getting around the suburbs!  I have to pick up the pace and get my momentum back . This is when my car (and a full tank of petrol) will prove very handy! I have exhausted all but one of the city cafes, so its out to the burbs I go (in burbs I really don't mean much further than Brunswick, Balaclava, or Fairfield!!)

I don't know whether it is just my new interest in everything coffee, but it seems to me there are alot of new "coffee houses" opening this year??!?!? I'm guessing they will need to make the Melbourne Coffee Review the top 150 to accommodate the talent and awesomeness of all these places!! (it wouldn't be fair to make a 'nearly made it' list)

Anyway.. back to coffee: Last weekend I took Uncle Paul on a Java Jane coffee adventure..... but I chose to stay close to home to showcase the joys of the little village that is  Yarraville (and proud home to Darby and I)! We wandered up and down the street, pointing out all the key landmarks.. the Butcher, the pub, the newsagent, the bookshops and the Sun Theatre and then I took him  to another favorite the Corner Shop (we were lucky enough to snag a table in prime time)... Luck was on our side for the day! We ordered some more frothy ones (cappuccinos) ... this time our coffee came with a different designs from our coffees the week before... Paul was very impressed with the coffee art and I think he now understands the pleasure that is my ritual daily coffee drinking! Our coffee as always was perfect.. I have a soft spot in my heart for the coffee here.. its always on song!

We had a spot of brunch there  and then descended on Footscray Kmart and Cole's to a) pick up a copy of Kung Fu Panda for Darby and b) pick up the ingredients for caramel slice for me!

I attempted to cook a caramel slice (in a pie tin!).... although it turned out well and tasted pretty darn good, it certainly wasn't without its dramas.. Although this is not a blog about food, sometimes the digression is worth it.. In this extreme case, I completely smoked out my apartment and suffocated everyone with  a burnt butter smell, it was streaming out  from my oven ....not a good look for someone trying to show  dessert making prowess ... and the smoke alarms didn't go off so that's even more to worry about.. anyway .. the end result was a delicious slice with not even a trace of smoke tainting it! Phew!!

And on Sunday an unprecedented thing happened.... I had no coffee...OMG I cant remember the last time this has occurred (which scared me even more) ...  OK so the moral of this blog is "I'm back" on the coffee tasting bandwagon from now on.. no excuses!!!

Another cup of coffee



A week has passed and I haven't written.... how tardy of me... I have been drinking coffee this week , but not with the same vigour or necessity that I have been this year.. It is still essential to my daily routine remaining one of the fundamental pleasures of  my day, I just can't seem to write about it!

Maybe because I have had a sad week, another gentle man gone way  before their time. Another shock of the reality's of life and the sometimes really crappy and meaningless curve balls that it throws!  It does make me lose  that sense of invincibility, we are all fragile and every moment, day , week, month  is precious and we need to be mindful of that and live in the moment....and don't lose faith! 

I attended a "Happiness" seminar at work today and I took away all of these things... as well as being gentle and kind to ourselves, look out for each other , write down 3 blessings every day... even if it is that you survived another day.. and enjoy the time we have, by smiling, laughing and immersing your self in the things that you are good at and that make you happy!!  For me thats coffee drinking! (and on the odd occasion - writing!)

In such an up and down week, I enjoyed coffee at places of comfort to me - Elevenses, The Corner Shop and Wee Jeannie - Plus a couple of newbies - The Truffula Seed (another one ticked off my list!) and A Pint of Milk  .... and then some on my Bendigo escape that were worth a mention as well - El Gordo and The Bendigo Corner Store. (see next blog post!)

First mention will go to the Truffula Seed... an Espresso bar  located in the Paris end of Collins St and nestled in the Shell house in Spring St ! The entry from Flinders lane was quite unique, I descended upon it from escalators above.. and it was a very very pretty site to see. The name of the cafe is inspired by the  Dr. Seuss book ‘The Lorax’, which is a story about the environment, industry and human nature... that explains that they run a sustainable no frills business, making sure to use ethically sourced beans from another one of my westie cafes "The Social Roasting Company"  and I'm guessing organic produce (and milk!). I was utterly mesmerised by the lit from within silhouettes that make up the coffee bench! If only i could get a replica and put it on my wall- check out my picture below and on their website!... It kind of reminds me of me... well  I'm not as delicate.. but I know it would inspire me to drink coffee everyday!  The coffee, with real chocolate sprinkles (a winner for me) was a the perfect warm anecdote on a very chilly Melbourne Afternoon! Why oh why does it have to be so far away! .....Ill come back here soon, if only to ask how I can get that picture!

Next on the coffee of the week is a newbie (only open for a few weeks) .... The Pint of Milk.. in Williamstown (or Newport as the maps say!) ... Only about 3km from home, it is nice to add another one to the ever growing western suburbs  list! I have been here a couple of times and had lunch, this day with my mum who was down to visit. As you might have guessed the Pint of milk is an old milk bar fit out! Still selling bread and milk... and the odd mixed lolly bag  or two! The cafe is bright and open with  newly polished hardwood timber floors the only giveaway that this place hasn't been open for longer, soon they will  treaded on more and more and will have garner a authentic rustic feel (like the corner shop does). The food each time I have been here has been fresh and delicious! The coffee is also good, although I think they are still perfecting that.. but I'm guessing it wont be long, especially since using 5 senses beans!

Friday was a very draining and emotional day ... where coffee was pretty far from my mind! Although I did manage to get  an early one  from Omar and the marvellous coffee bird in Gardenvale...after Darby was dropped off with Grandpa Vic... I think I was inspired as Dave's dad gave me a wonderful and heartfelt surprise... A CD burned just for Java Jane.. with drumroll..... songs all about coffee.... It was a really touching thing to give me and it has been played in my car ever since.. Its magic to listen to artists such a KD Lang, Bob Dylan, Nat King Cole, Bill Haley  all singing about coffee!  It made a hard day feel a little easier and did give me that warm and fuzzy feeling that someone else in the universe is interested in what I am doing!

And on that note I will leave it there for today.. I will start my regular writing, curve balls and all from now on!! I am on the home straight... 38 cafes to go and I still have 28 weeks left of 2011!!

PS: My newest craze in getting my life back to basics has been cooking my own bread, in the words of Nigella, there is nothing as satisfying as baking your own bread and their is some kind of whimsical nostalgia  that makes you feel very satisfied for all that hard work (well its not really that hard apart from a little kneading, which is more tension releasing and therapeutic than hard or annoying !!) ... and of course it tastes amazing straight from the oven with lashings of butter! I was amazed at just how simple and easy it is to do.. no bread maker required!  I just have to remember to not eat too much of it!!

Saturday in the Yarraville sun!

It wasn't the ideal way to start a sunny weekend - spending the first few hours waiting to see my local GP  for some antibiotics for my wretched **@#@&%  tooth.. When we were finished the ordeal,  I wasn't sure if I needed a coffee or a very stiff drink! I needed some time to ponder this ....

So Darby and I drove to Yarrvaille so I could decide and to come good on my promise of the morning ' be a good boy for mummy at the doctors and we will get a sparkle biscuit(his all time fave from the Heather Dell bakery in Anderson St)' .. He was spectacularly good for me.. and I'm sure it wasn't just from my bribe.. he knows I'm not feeling well and is genuinely concerned with how looking after me , constantly asking - are you OK mum? The doctor will fix you'..... bless him! 

When I did get  him his biscuit and watched a very impromptu band and veterans march down Anderson st (over in a few seconds but I found it very overwhelming ).  I contemplated my options - that stiff  drink idea still lingering or a coffee.... my head was thumping, so I had to make a decision quickly,  and I really didn't think a dose of caffeine would alleviate it but I also thought entering the pub with a child at 10.30am may look seriously dodge... in Footscray maybe but not Yarraville! Plus my head was sore  from the 2 drinks I consumed last night??? I am sooo weak .... I would have thought the Panadeine  would have settled any headache, alcohol related or not!

I ended up being sensible and chose COFFEE!! I walked past Wee Jeannie, but it was looking rather busy, so I chose her sister and other favorite - The Corner shop in Ballarat St.
Darby and I perched ourselves at the big communal table and ordered drinks instantly! Darby's mini chocolate milkshake arrived within minutes and  I had a taste and almost wished I had ordered one, sweet chocolaty.. cold  and downright delicious!
It was busy as it usually is on Saturdays but the ebb and flow of customers was not at all frantic and stressful like it sometimes can be here.

The service from the new wait staff was very prompt, I ordered some eggs when Darby's drink arrived... (I think food was going to help!)

My coffee came next and even though thinking this was not what my body ordered,  it was exactly the right thing! My headache instantly lifted (uh-oh - alarm bells.. Does this mean I am addicted to caffeine and my body was having a physical reaction to no coffee??? surely not, it was only 10.30am!)

The crema was light and fluffy, with the magical chocolate on top exploding and melting in my mouth.. it was a marvelous experience.. and certainly a unique one I don't have anywhere else! It does bring me back every time! The Coffee that followed was smooth and rich and really marvelous especially when drinking to  the sounds of an all time fave Fleetwood Mac song "Dreams"  (and the whole Rumours album to follow- yay!) ... Darby and I sat there and grooved away  while we ate.. it was bliss.... I didn't think coffee was what I needed, but it was exactly the cure of me feeling off this morning! I should have known (Ill remember this cure  for next time) !!
Oh and we also had a couple of celebrity spotting's in the Corner Shop (if you can call them celebrities!) Comedian Adam Hills.. coming in to enjoy a solo coffee... and the guy that plays the doctor of that new show "winners and losers" having breakfast whilst holding his  baby! He is so cute!
All in all a 10/10 coffee morning!!!Oh and the sun was shining too as a bonus!!!  



On Friday my mum and Darby came in for an afternoon coffee  with me while at work! I  of course took them to Elevenses! It was fairly busy, so we sat outside in the relatively sunny autumn afternoon.... our coffee and babycinos were as always delicious and the lime macaroon we consumed (although just a small bite) was aHHHmazZZZing!! I might have to get the salted caramel next time!! hmmmm

Darby was on his best behaviour even though he was beside himself with tiredness... such a coffee trooper now!!

Work, Life, Balance, and good Coffee!

Well its good news to start with today, a brand spanking new car back in my possession, 3 weeks to the day! Yay! Boy have I missed my wheels.. I can really recommence my coffee challenge and start hitting the burbs for some caffeine! Although on the flip side my body has really thanked me for this extra walking... so I am going to try and keep the activity levels up!

This week has been rather hit and miss on the coffee front .... Monday, Darby and I ventured to Spotswood by train in the freezing cold weather  (who knew it was the last day of Summer!!!!) to visit the Duchess of Spotswood. I have been here a couple of times and it was brilliant! Alas we arrived and their coffee machine was being taken away in a car, not a great sign! Another broken machine! Damn!!!

Coffee dilemma solved by catching the train back to Yarraville (luckily only 1 stop) and meeting up with  my aunty at an old fave:  The Corner Shop! I can never fault their coffee, it is always incredibly smooth and rich. (and no broken coffee machine in sight)

 I was back in Spotswood again on Tuesday to pick up  my car so thought I'd swing by the  Duchess again, but it closed at 3.30! (I arrived at 3.35!!!) Ill keep persisting and go tomorrow!  I have worked hard for this coffee,  I hope its a good one.

I have  also still battled on with my cold, I felt better over the weekend and then went severely downhill when I was back at work (mmm makes me wonder if work is the culprit for making me sick! Ill ponder that some more) .

Work  and home life have thrown me some challenges this week that normally wouldn't  phase me, but somehow I have found it to overwhelming, tears as well! Oh Jane!!!

Quite ironic though that a topic of  my team meeting on Tuesday was Work Life Balance - Is it a load of twaddle! 

 Who really has it??? Is it just a nice saying?? Does it exist in the real world??? This week I'm  certainly  not feeling any kind of balance in life or at work !  I'm completely out of whack!!

Lets hope tomorrow off will rejuvenate and revive me before the weekend!

Anyway enough of the serious stuff, lets talk about  the most important topic : coffee... I went to Elevenses this morning and was a little concerned when a man was tinkering around with the coffee machine. Oh no not another broken coffee machine, I just couldn't bare it..not this week ...Thank god it was fine and I actually think today's cup was the best I have had from the guys here and that is saying ALOT.... Thank you Elevenses! You made my day!!

I needed to get out of the office for  Lunch, So headed to Eclipse for Lunch with Janine. We both loved what we had.... it was very tasty with finesse, and  presented soo well (it also filled me up for the whole day). My fancy was Flat bread toasted with Chicken, Bacon, Avocado, and Aioli, with Rocket!  The coffee was beautiful as well ..



Highlight of the day: Catching the train home with Darby and using the Master Chef magazine as a picture book.  We read together pointing out all the obvious things , George, Gary, Matt, Curtis, Figs, Lemons, Pizza, Chilli, pasta etc etc! What a great purchase, we both get enjoyment out of it!! Classic moment when we got to   George and Gary's chocolate desserts and I told Darb's everything that was on the page! He piped up "mum I want to cook  a Jaffa Souffle with candy orange !" A few peak hour commuters smirked at that!  Bring it on Darb's!!! Ill drink to that!

Manic Monday

 It feels like deja vu again, another Monday here again so quickly and I am doing what i did last Monday! Soon they will all blend into one long long long monday with no car,  spent sipping coffees at the corner shop, whilst wrangling a 3 year old! Ah life, it really is bliss!!!

As I preempted I did have some Children's bookshop negotiating to do before I could enjoy my morning coffee ! Darby was very persistent about going in, and so like every desperate parent does at some point in time, the little 'white lie' came out! It involved an (invisible) rubbish truck driving by.. I was crossing my fingers a real one would actually drive by to back me up.   I also promised a Ginger flower biscuit! Yes.... the  distracting worked! 1 point for mum!

Now onto the coffee... it was as good as ever, I can never fault the coffee here. I particularly love the coffee supreme cream and gold cups, they are gorgeous. Very art deco! If only I knew where I could get some.....



I love sitting  at the window with Darby watching the yarraville village go by, time just goes and Darby is so well behaved, we read the paper together and sip our coffees/babycinos. I get put in my place when I try to take a bit of his biscuit "No mum you drink your Soy Cappucino, Darby is eating the biscuit thanks!" Very Diplomatic!

Luckily for Darby (and for me) we saw a Rubbish Truck on the way home and that made Darbys day... and me feel a little less guilty about  my little lie!

Just down to the corner shop

Its a Monday morning and the search for good coffee is on! I decide to go local today and visit the Corner Shop in Yarraville - this is only a short walk away from home and is always worth it!
First off Darby and I stop off in the children's bookstore next door, (the only downfall for going to this place is this darn bookstore, I tried the "its not open on Monday line" but that failed when he noticed the door was wide open and a happy child walked out with a book under his arm! Damn!!
 My coffee trip to the Corner shop often costs me a book as a trade off, normally I try to resist but today I was not in the mood for bargaining with a 3 year old, or for any tantrums that would surely follow.
My coffee time is my zen, so I didn't want to have Darby screaming or running around.. and today as a result of the Maisy book, he was very well behaved ... on most occasions he is fantastic but I had a feeling today could have turned the other way!
Here he is engrossed in his Maisy books! Bless!!

We sat at the bench seats overlooking Ballarat St and I ordered my Soy Cappuccino! The thing I enjoy almost more than the coffee itself is the  Real chocolate sprinkle on top.. the gorgeous dark chocolate sprinkles melt in your mouth and tastes heavenly when mixed with  the coffee froth on top.. This is my real treat of the day! If I'm lucky some  sprinkles will sink to the bottom of the cup and I have them in my last sip! I really am a child at heart!  Bliss!  I think that's why I keep coming back.......

Here it is a few minutes later... and I'm one satisfied customer!

Before I go, I also better clear up a contentious issue I'm having with my ex partner! Its not really the kind of problem you think we would be having  but it is an issue we cannot agree on.. What is the difference between a Latte and Cappuccino????????


Well to solve it I took to Google to seek their advice.... and found this definition on Wikipedia!

Its Raining its Pouring!

Ahh well my coffee endeavours were very noble today! I visited a '3 beaner' from the coffee review and it was well worth it!
St Ali in South Melbourne is another one of these cafes that is soo hard to find, tucked down a side street alley, but is always bursting with people. Today was no exception, I managed to get myself a seat in the corner at a counter and salivated over every ones yummy looking breakfasts, mind you I had just put in an hours worth of hard core exercise at the Botanical Gardens, so I felt as though I earnt something tasty! Alas I resisted and ordered my usual coffee. Although I had to wait quite awhile for it, the coffee was faultless and it was gone in just a few sips. My guzzling of caffeine made me want to order another straight up but instead I made  my first coffee purchase for home. A bag of the House blend coffee ground for my percolator.... I cant wait to try it tomorrow morning! This resolution could turn out more expensive than I anticipated! Oh well, its all in the name of research!


Last night Melbourne saw sooo much rain, I was oblivious to most of this as I was on a date with Laura R at the movies. Before we went to the pics  we had dinner at the Corner Shop in Yarraville. I ordered a Soy  Mocha and as usual I could not fault there coffee, it was divine... I've never had a bad coffee experience here...

New Years Resolution!

Like most people I always make New Years Resolutions, most of the time they are to Lose Weight , Get fitter, spend less money , save more money, plan a trip etc etc etc etc
But after a tumultuous year.... one of the hardest of my life, I have decided to be kind to myself.. Yes I will try and lose weight and et al but this year I want to do something I can actually achieve, feel proud of and learn more about myself as I go.  This New Years Resolution sounds silly, but I think it has lots of  potential to be great and its already giving me some purpose (The buzz word for Resilient people) ... so here we go!
I took some inspiration from the a cute little movie 'Julie and Julia', but making my way through an exquisite cook book was a) going to be expensive, b) probably would not help with losing weight c) I wouldn't really be leaving my house.....

So instead I am going to go to all the places (plus more) in the Melbourne 2011 Coffee Review http://www.melbournecoffeereview.com/ -  all 100 of them to try their coffee and if it gets too easy I will seek out more places to go! I have downloaded the application and have started already!
So in  trying to practice what I preach from a Health Promotion and Psychology point of view (what I do everyday at work) I thought a SMARTER goal was more achievable for me. 
 S  - Specific goal- drink coffee from the 100 best places in Melbourne 
 M - Measurable - I will become a coffee expert, go to new places and may meet some handsome barrista's or two
 A-  Achievable - Anything is achievable when you are buzzing on caffeine
 R-  Realistic - well I love coffee to start with, so it should be easy
 T - Time Based - 12 months should be easy - 11 months to go
 E - Exciting - what is NOT exciting about drinking great coffee most days of the year
 R - Recorded - That's what this blog is for! No cheating here!
As I go along I will give my own description of the experience and of course the most important part - the coffee. I plan to make some excursions from the West to the North, East and South all in the name of my resolution!
So here we go...........
Straight up I better clear up how I take my coffee - Soy Cappuccino (with 2 equal .. I know I'm trying to quit..), but I am open to trying lots of different beans, milks and styles... see its already liberating!


A month into 2011 and I have already been to 11 places (plus a couple of extras that I think should be on the list)
- Cafenatics (near my work so very easy!)
- Eclipse ( just discovered and also near work .. so I don't have to try too hard either)
- Brother Baba Budan - stopped on the way back from a meeting - understand why it gets 3 beans! It was amazing... will be making another trip back there before February is gone
- Di Bella Coffee Roasting - another yummy coffee experience... near my sisters and was feeling a little hungover so need to go back again! Food was delish too
- The Corner Shop - Home Territory ... love the way they use Real Choc on top....mmmmmm
- Le Chien - Well this has been my place for coffee for sooo long, six years I have been going here and probably for a long time to come, I love the familiarity, I know the staff and I love how the place makes me feel. Reminds me of good times (and some sad). It helped me get through last year with a smile on my face.
- Pope Joan - Need to come back here again, the coffee and food were gorgeous, but I had a grumpy and squealing Darby with me so the 'experience' could have been better, service was lovely, they wrapped up the uneaten fruit toast in foil so I could make a quick exit! Bless! Ill be back again, I wish it was here when I lived in Glenlyon Rd... would have been my place to go.
- Duchess of Spotswood. - A new find and very close to home... need to come back again to try the food.. Coffee was yummy, using Bonsoi milk makes a difference... just have to watch I don't get a thyroid problem! Will be back.
- I shouldnt Forget Seven Seeds... which took me on a wild goose chase to find, but was completely worth it. I have been looking forward to this experience for so long I hoped it didn't let me down as my expectations were very high. Thank goodness it didn't. The coffee was so delicate but intense and strong at the same time (now I sound like a coffee snob!) I will be back here no doubt... 3 beans from me as well
