Bridesmaids Boot Camp

This whole  wedding business started to feel real.. In 9 and a bit weeks  I will be a bridesmaid.. At the age of 32 this is the first time I have had the honour of being one, so to say I am excited is a massive understatement! The fact that the wedding is overseas is the icing on the cake really!

The bride and I picked up the bridesmaids dresses last week, so I could take it home and make any changes to it that may be needed.
But of course I had to try it on for the bride....
With trepidation I unzipped it.... slipped it over my lumpy backside... and on over my bigger than usual shoulders... It fits, and it looks great... a beautiful classic style and I am so relieved that the dress is all sorted!! I do really love it, which I know is not a regular occurrence for bridesmaids! (flashes of the movie 27 dresses come to mind!)
There is one thing though that I would like to change a little (or a lot) before the big day... that lumpy backside of mine...
So this week I kicked my bridesmaid boot camp into gear!! Mostly out of sheer panic and mostly because we are heading into winter and if I can stick to an exercise plan now, it will hopefully carry through until  summer (fingers crossed anyway!)
So I'm starting with exercise first, and then I will work on my diet.. I know in reality I should be doing it the other way around, but somehow the more exercise I do the more I want to eat clean and healthy!
Back in the days where exercise
was easy!!
In the old days (pre single motherhood) I would do 3-5 classes a week... often this consisted of classes early in the morning before Darby and Dave woke - I am a good morning exerciser, I loved the feeling of having done my exercise for the day before 7am!! I also did  one or two evening classes as well as a Saturday morning class! (Dedicated I know!)
I was able to lose weight, or at least maintain it and I was pretty happy with my body... Fast Forward... two years of single parenthood have taken its toll,  I try and be as active as possible, but it takes a backward step to the other more important and essential priorities!
Last year I was  spiralling towards a breakdown and I knew that exercise would help to fix this... so I found a personal trainer just around the corner.. and I committed to it. It was only once a week.. that's was the only time and money I could afford! I was dedicated, I have only missed 3 sessions since July last year!  I don't get that pre exercise, should I or shouldn't I go feeling? I always want to as it is time dedicated just for me (and its  always so different and that's what I love... )
So in the last few weeks through my personal trainer I started doing an outdoor group Boxing class in a park near my house... just slowly getting my body used to more intense exercise..

Last night I bravely put on my gym clothes and headed to the local leisure centre! Being Anzac day the choice of classes was pretty small . There was RPM - a cycle class or this explosive high energy boxing class. Don't get me wrong I love boxing to death but it sounded a bit too scary for my liking '! So I went with RPM.. I knew what I was in for- I had done this class about 9 years ago..
I got myself set up by the teacher, and off I went on a virtual bike ride through hell... I pushed myself, but didn't go too crazy.. I did want to come back after all..
Over the 45 minute class  I managed to clock over 20 km which I was happy with.. And apart from my sore backside from the uncomfortable seat I think I'll be back again next week!
So here is a run down of what I am going to try and do over the next 9 weeks!
- weekly personal training session with Adammy PT
- weekly group outdoor boxing and circuit class with my PT
- weekly spin class
- 15 minute walk during my work day
- 5 minute circuit everyday of squats, push ups ,sit ups, overhead raises biceps curls
- minimum of 12000 steps- every day - I have worn a pedometer every day for the last 4 years!!! Even all dresses to weddings, you name it - I have worn it to!
I needed to consider the money as well. I don't have much to spend, so I have to do it wisely. My personal trainer is the luxury item, but also the necessity, he pushes me like nobody can, so I need that!
Anything else is a bonus! I have pushed myself, but not to the point where it is unachievable.. I needed to consider that I do work 4 days and I am a single mum ... But like any challenge I won't let those things stop me! I know once I get going I get motivation to push myself!
As for my diet... I might write another post to tackle that one!!
It feels good to have it recorded... I'll try not to bore you with too many updates but might do a fortnightly recap!
If you have any tips for time effective exercise.. I'm all ears? Did you implement something similar when you were getting married or in a wedding??
PS I multitasking right now! As I write this I am (carefully) walking a lap of the park in my lunch break - and have done 8000 steps for the day so far!!

Until next time...

Life is full of Surprises!

Darby and I arrived home on a wet miserable night! I was glad to slump on the couch with my little man and tune out for the night...

I then realised I had forgotten my FatMumSlim Photo a day .. No biggie really... but this one meant something to me! "Something I am grateful for"....
I can think of a hundreds of things.... but my NUMBER ONE ....is of course the bond that Darby and I share!
So I said to Darbs.... give mum a cuddle and Ill try to capture it on my iPhone... So he lent in.. me expecting a warm cuddle....but to my surprise I got was a massive lick to the face.... It gave me such a shock and a massive belly laugh! - This is the exact moment.... (Good photo taking skills I know! ) The photo is grainy.. and not focused, but I love it all the more.. It will be my little reminder that Life is full of wonderful moments that can take you by surprise!

Living in the moment!

I re read my last post... and apart from all the mistakes...(I need to hire a proof reader!!!) a word I used stuck out like a sore thumb... "Moments"!!

How do you define these?
For me I think its just not consciously trying to "create" one, but when they happen naturally, in places where I may expect it... and then places where it surprises me, catches me  off guard, its like a signal to the brain and I realise and try and live in it.... But I also step back so I can remember it.. To see the beauty, the wonder in something that could happen everyday or just once off.....
My toes curl and my smile beams with happiness, my heart skips a beat....and my belly does a flip...  These are what moments mean to me.... Living life.... to..... the...... full........ with whatever situation you are in!

What do Moments mean to you ?

Until next time, Live in the moment and enjoy good coffee

The daily grind (I so wish it was coffee related!)

My mojo is missing in action...  It seems to have been swallowed up by the  day to day grind of my life - if you could call it that!!
I'm a massive believer in living life to the max.. It's too precious and precarious to be complacent..
I have seen lives unfairly taken too soon this year and I almost pledged to myself at those very moments that I would live each and every moment to its full potential..
So it's been hard when I have felt myself slipping into this day to day coma ... I need to get off this conveyor belt before its too late and time and moments pass me by.. Living with regret is by far more painful than not living at all....

At the moment my life is revolved around work, getting to work, coming home from work ... Every moment it's in my head.. And I'm finding its not a healthy place to live..
Here is a run down of how my day pan's out....
I wake at 10 to 6 to get myself ready for the day..
I shower, pretty myself up and dress in whatever I can find that is not dirty.....
I gently nudge Darby from his slumber at 6.30.. Some mornings he jumps out of bed raring to go, other mornings it's harder, he won't stir, he is still in a deep sleep. I hate waking him so early... so I let him sleep until qtr to seven and I then I start poking him again and call his name gently, trying my best to stir him..
I lay out some of his clothes.. I know that he will tell me he doesn't want spiderman or superman today.. Today is a batman kind of day..
We struggle with this for awhile.. He always wins.. I don't have the energy to play that game..
Some days if he wants to wear his pajama top he wears it.. some days he is so under dressed or overdressed... but in the scheme of things it is not important...
I make him some food, sometimes cereal other times it's just juice on the run (thank god Childcare does breakfast!) He eats while I make a piece of toast and pack my lunch for the day.. I coax him to dress himself.. Some days he whips his clothes on as fast as can be.. other days.. I have to dress him... It all comes down to what side of the bed he wakes on..

I throw some clothes in his bag and his chuck in his beloved  piggy and get out the door at 7.15... Its a stretch.. but we are slowly getting it down pat!

We enjoy the drive into Childcare.. I try and get him as excited about his day.. this is hard when he keeps saying " Mum I don't want to go to kinder.. I want to spend the day with you" - this is heartbreaking for me as I would love nothing more than to spend the day with him playing.. I tell him its only a few days and we will get some time together..... My heart aches until I get that time at the weekend..
We arrive at kinder at 7.35.. If we are lucky I get a park out front.. On a bad morning we drive around the Collins st block and I start to feel my blood pressure rise...
Eventually I get a park pay for 5 mins even though I'll be 10 and quickly rush to the 4th floor .. I organise toast for him and he sits down... It's easy when one of his friends is there... we kiss goodbye .. But some mornings he doesn't want me to leave.. They are a killer ... There are tears..I hold mine in till I make it the  back to the car... Sometimes I don't even make it! I know he is fine but gee it's gut wrenchingly  hard, my whole body aches and I wish this could be easier ..

I jump in the car.. And navigate my way through city traffic. Nervously do one of those silly hook turns  and weave through my path to work.. .. I arrive at the botanical gardens and find a park.... I am lucky that there are always plenty of parks.. And it is on the cheap side for parking...

Work is a short 8 minute walk.. This is when I read alot of the blog posts that have arrived in my inbox overnight.. its my unwind time...the calm before the storm...
My day is over in a blur.... my blood pressure rises to breaking point... luckily I work around Health Professionals so there is medical experience at hand should I ever need it!!
The morning goes... I manage to sneak in a good coffee.. the highlight... and if I'm lucky I may get out in the sunshine for 10 or so minutes! Some days it gets to 3pm and I haven't had my lunch and my head is pounding...
I do my best to get away from my desk... as I know my headaches are directly  caused by stress and staring at computer screens all day!
I generally get out at 5pm with a sigh... another day down... I meander back to the car..Well I am tired.. but some days I almost sprint to get the car.... By this stage I cant wait to pick up Darby and I want to get there before he goes down into the after 6pm room, where all the kids meet at the end of the day if their mums and dads have not arrived...
I again weave through traffic... it is a toss of the coin as to how the traffic is.. some days I can get to his kinder in 15 minutes, other days its 45 minutes! (these days are not good... and I cry all the way there!)
I get to him at around 5.45... I hurry in, almost beaming... so excited to be seeing him in a few moments and wrapping him in a big cuddle... I love this part of the day.... we are almost there, on the home run... he is so excited too... happy to tell me about his day ..
We debrief the highlights in the car ride home..

We get home around 6.15... and then we settle in for the night... normally with poached eggs on toast.. or something so basic it shouldn't really be counted as dinner!
We get in our pyjamas.. and  I am slump in my red chair.. Its like a big red warm hug at the end of the day ... I read Darby some books and we head to bed... ready to do it all again tomorrow..

These days are not how I want to live my life forever.. it is exhausting.. it is draining and there seems to be no balance.... I feel all out of kilter (plus  I look like absolute crap!!! I'm sure I have more wrinkles now than I did 6 months ago!!) I know its only temporary..... I just don't know how much longer I can do it for... One day at a time.... One day at a time.....

And of course, until next time, life is too short for crappy coffee...

Coffee in the city.....

In search of my missing mojo.. I decided I needed to get back to basics... back to what I enjoy most...
Spending quality time with Darby.. and treating myself to a coffee tour of the city, and trying coffee from somewhere I have wanted to go for a long time! Darby is also at a perfect age to explore our wonderful city!! He loves these trips as much as I do!!
This is exactly what we both needed...

Oh what a weekend....

Easter has come and gone in a blur... there was lots of fun and frivolity had.... oh and of course enough chocolate consumed for the whole rest of the year!!!

This year the Easter bunny impressed my little Batman.... he was in awe of the how the bunny rabbit knew to bring Batman jocks.. that rabbit is clever!

Here are some pics of the weekend...

Grateful for no Dentist visits this Easter!

Well Good Friday has come around for 2012.. (how is it that the year is going so damn fast!)....Easter has always been  my favourite time of the year... It is is always so happy and relaxed.. I have always preferred it over the frenetic chaos that is  Xmas!

Although I don't remember last Easter that fondly.. to be honest it went to the dog house! Some moments were joyful....but the pain, oh the pain. I am glad that this year I will be pain free and also remain out of the dentists operating chair!!  (Well I might head there after I have consumed copious amounts of chocolate eggs..)

I spent last Good Friday evening and into the early hours of the morning in the Bendigo Hospital Emergency room! I waited 5 hours to be see a doctor, while I writhed and groaned in pain watching terrible infomercials begging to be seen by someone, anyone!

I had very stupidly ignored a tooth ache for some time... and I paid the ultimate price!
So on Easter Saturday I had to seek out a dentist in a country town, it was no easy feat! Basically I was told by more than one medical professional that my Easter was over!
I decided that wasn't going to be the case... so I went on my own Easter hunt and tracked down the only dentist on call all weekend! I took a punt on him, he was abrupt and a bit of a smart arse... he said meet me at "this address at 12.00pm and I will fix you up!" .. Yes I was putting alot of faith in someone I didn't know and who was going to be poking around in my mouth with sharp instruments!
He was an eccentric and maybe a tad crazy, but he was willing to pull out my tooth, and I couldn't have been happier! The pain relief was instant!

So I spent the rest of Easter recovering from a tooth extraction.. I managed to eat a couple of eggs but it wasn't the same with the gauze in the other side of my mouth!

This year I am happy my teeth are all fine (touch wood!) and I will not be putting on a repeat performance!

I am so grateful for this little break away from my usual day to day grind..which has been wearing me down of later.

I am grateful that I will be able to stuff my face with as many eggs as I can handle with no consequences! (well until I see my dentist next!)

I'm grateful that I can spend this favorite holiday of mine with those that I love, and most importantly my little Darby, who brings sunshine to my every day.. he has got my back... he is my carer, and he looks after me more than I probably look after him.. he soothes my soul and makes my heart pound with happiness...I'm forever in his gratitude...

Happy Easter...if you get a toothache from all the eggs... I can recommend a good dentist : )
Until next time.... Life is to short for crappy coffee...

Wordless Wednesday - Happy Easter

The Easter bunny will be here on Sunday ... and he cant come soon enough... give me those eggs and get out of here! Well, maybe I am more happy that the chocolate that adorns every shop will be gone until at least err umm December and the temptation can go away for another 6 months or so!
Most of all I am looking forward to a break away with Darby and my family...
Here are a couple of Easter pics of years gone by (the rabbit ears seem to be very popular!!) ....

Straight from the hip - The adventures of my dodgy legs...

So I thought it might be time to share the long and  problematic story of my dodgy, troubled legs.  I have wanted to write about them for some time now.. but just never got around to doing it. Just never seemed to be that important...
Somehow I have found the time and energy to write the story and have managed to churn out a a long long long post... I probably should have split it up but I just kept typing!

Like my star sign,  Sagiiturius.... my life has been ruled by my hips... yes they are wide and childbearing, but they have been to hell and back and stayed strong, they are the foundation to my body.. when they fail, everything seems to fall apart!

I have not let them define who I am and the person I have become....Although some of my personality traits, good and bad probably come from dealing with this pain every day of my life.....

Except for the odd Drama Queen moments I know I am a better person because of the journey my legs have taken me on.....

So the other day I had a familiar twinge in my left hip... a pain that I know far too well, and to be honest I don't want to feel, not for the next 10 years anyway. You see, I have had a rocky relationship with my right hip for some time now, 32 years to be exact.....  my left hip, has served me well, not perfect but its been on its best behaviour until now, never really causing me trouble and basically doing as it anatomically should...
It was like waking and my left hip sarcastically exclaiming  "I'm here, you can no longer ignore me ".....
A few days later and it seems to be ok, only twinging every so often, so I have my fingers and toes  tightly crossed...
So I better go back  to the start and explain my dodgy right hip's history from beginning to now...
My godmother and I - mm am I a boy??
I certainly look like it here
In my children's hospital shirt
in my special pram... nice holes in my
plaster!!
I was one of the unfortunate bubs born with dislocated hips....  not  a disaster really .... The only problem it seemed was they weren't picked up in those routine tests that are done on newborns soon as they exit the womb.. nope not in the 70's (actually it became mandatory in the 80's only a month after I was born) .... so they were dislocated from day one.... from all reports I seemed to be a happy enough baby, chubby as anything ... but I just couldn't move much.. my mum took me to doctors when I couldn't move my legs properly and  was showing no interest in sitting, rolling or crawling..  but they dismissed her as a first time mum who was just overly concerned... finally someone listened to her  and saw the quite obvious problem.. I was 10 months old  and I had dislocated hips!!

I immediately taken to the Royal Children's hospital and put in plaster... a month for every month I was old .. so from 10 months to almost 2 years I was in plaster.. from ankle to waist... with only a little slit for you know what!!
I learnt to crawl, (on my mum and dads gravel driveway and rip mighty big holes in my plaster) and finally to walk when my legs were free at almost two..

My parents spent a fair time travelling from the country down to Melbourne to have my plaster changed every month... I was lucky I had been chubby as a baby.. I lost quite a lot of weight with the hospital stays!  I can only imagine it would have been quite distressing for my parents at the time.. I cant remember it.. except I have a vivid memory of having my plaster sawn off my legs, I would have been almost 2, not sure its a dream or a memory..

After that I was all good... but then around the age of 4 , my parents noticed I started limping a lot and I  described  an aching pain in my hips,  I was then diagnosed with Perthes disease, a degenerative bone disease in my right hip.. something a lot more common in boys than in girls...

I can't really remember it having a big impact, but it did mean I got out of lots of activities at school .. no high jump or hurdles for me ...
The downside I  was often the last one picked in a sports team as I was slowest and couldn't really run.. I did manage to play netball and basketball and did lots of swimming, so by no means was I missing out on active childhood..
My hips then didn't give me much trouble again... it was only the odd immature boy at high school who would tease  me for my slight limp, which only happened when I was tired and on my legs for too long...
At my year 10 camp to Central Australia I flatly refused climbing Ayres Rock.. only to be talked into climbing UP THE the whole thing!! Although 2 male teachers had to carry me down the last 50 or so metres off the rock ...what a sight that must have been! I remember my legs shaking and shaking for some time after that.. probably not from pain but from sheer shock that I could do such a thing!! I'm sure my hips have had a lot to do with a low self confidence over my life, not allowing me to step to of my comfort zone...

My hips stayed all happy... my whole tweens and into my 21st year.. (my knee on the other hand dislocated a few times... which was more horrifying than anything.. if you have ever seen those footy players knees dislocate on the field and they have to pop it back in.. I have been there done that.. on more than one occasion!)
So in my 21st year the familiar hip pain that I hadn't felt for years came back.. I started limping all the time and I was generally just uncomfortable, depressed and getting fat from my inactivity... I took myself begrudgingly to the GP and he referred me to an Orthopedic surgeon.. after a multitude and hundreds of dollars later, I had had every Xray, Cat Scan and MRI anyone could have of there lower body, I was sent to a back specialist, but in the end I found Dr Young... The Hip Doctor!!!
I have seen him more times than I can count now ....  In my first appointment,  it him about 2 mins into the conversation and one look at my  Xray to mention the S word!! mmmm it looked like I was  going to have surgery!

My first surgery was booked for December 2001 and I really was so naive.. At 21 I don't think I took that much in.. and to be honest and to his apology and credit  later Dr Young did not prepare me very well with what was to expect, because what came next was a very rude awakening.. into a life and pain I was not familiar with!
My first operation a Periacetabular Osteotomy was in the hope I didn't have to have a Hip replacement, basically it was a hip reconstruction... to put it where it was meant to be, in hind sight it was to get my hip in the best position for the hip replacement to come...!!
Without the gory details, I basically had my Femur (the largest bone in the body) cut in half and moved around.. and then a rod shoved down it.. nice!!
So I was not prepared for the pain I had to endure.. I remember my mum and sister sitting by my bed in tears as I was screaming and crying in so much pain.. and I had all the pain meds I could handle... I soon learnt that Morphine was not my friend.. my body was allergic to it...
All glammed up and no where to go!!! That stick in
the air was to help me get out of bed... I got a lot of use out
of all the smorgasbord of products from the
oldies shops, including a cool toilet seat!!
I spent the next 5 or 6 weeks being looked after by my parents, including showering and all things that as a 22 year old you wouldn't want your parents to be doing or knowing..
I was on crutches for the next 6 months or so and went about my daily life as normal, this included nights out to bars and pubs... (I still don't know why and earth I did this...no common sense obviously!) catching a tram to work every day...

So it was no wonder after about 3 months I was back in hospital as I had developed a haematoma (blood clot) around the top of my hip!
So off for another 2 nights in hospital... and not even a month later I was back in again for my rod to be removed.. This time it was more serious.. The rod had splintered in my leg.. too many falls  had caused this (those damn crutches had a habit of slipping on anything!)
My surgeon warned me that my leg was still broken, the rod was meant to be in for at least another 6 months for my bone to heal and fuse!!  I was on strict strict instructions not to fall over.... A very hard ask of someone who practically trips over every day!!! But I managed to keep my promise and keep myself away from the operating table for the next 6 months!
Phew... I had a arthroscope at the end of the year to make sure it was all ok... and in 2003 I managed to have surgery free year!

2004 was not to be so lucky.. after a few falls (surprise surprise) on my right knee... I knew it was not in good shape.. but I waited too long to see my surgeon about it..
I managed to get an appointment and the next day I was being wheeled into theatre for a knee reconstruction... it was to  tighten the ligaments around my kneecap so it wouldn't dislocate anymore... Out of all my operations this was one of the most painful and hardest to get over.. it really took it out of me.. I think I would have slipped into a deep depression, but it was at the same time I started going out with Dave.. and falling head over heels seemed to take some of the pain away!

In the December I was scheduled to have another massive surgery on my right hip, again trying to stop me from having a replacement... this surgery meant I needed a few months of work to rehabilitate.
Luckily for me the surgery was cancelled, at the time I was shattered, but in retrospect it was the best thing that could have happened...
I managed to get through the next 18 months with the odd Arthroscope to keep an eye on my hip, until the moment came on a Friday afternoon in  March 2006...

At an appointment with Dr Young and myself (it always was the way when I was being delivered the biggest news aka surgery I was always by myself!) at the age of 26 I was told I would need a hip replacement.
The hip replacement I was hoping was still 10 years away .. was now upon me.. I still have vivid memories of that day... of my hands shaking as I booked Friday May 12 as my surgery date... and walking out of the doctors rooms, holding in the tears until I was out on the street and the sunglasses were on my face.. of making the call to Dave to tell him... of sobbing into the phone as I called my mum and dad.. I really did fall apart...
I don't know why I was so upset.. It felt like my own body had failed me..
Looking back I wished I had seen it as an opportunity to heal my body and to make it better... in the months prior to my surgery my mindset shifted and I only looked at the positives. My resilience kicked in and to be honest it hasn't ever gone away....

Just after my Hip Replacement operation.... looking doped up!!!!
This time I was organised... in the 6 weeks leading up to the surgery I tried to get in the best shape I could... I read all the information I could get my hands on, I met up with other young people who had had the procedure.. My surgeon had just undergone the same surgery a few months earlier, so he really did empathise with me this time.. he even wrote a recovery guide to help me undestand what was going to happen and the aftermath ...
Day 3 after Hip replacement - I already have the makeup
back on!!! I must be ok!
The day rolled around and I really wasn't that nervous.. I looked at my positive future.. and how this was going to help me ......  I knew it would be painful and yes it was out of this world painful... I couldn't get enough of pethidine.. or any other drug they threw at me... Some of the more painful moments were the relatively smaller ones, like getting the drip removed... having the catheter taken out... all the ones I was awake for!!

I had 4 -5 weeks off work... spent mostly at my mum and dads house.. the perfect place to relax and do nothing... those weeks of recovery were so nice.. I did have bad days.. but I could physically see I  was getting better every day....
I really soothed my soul whilst I was there.. I focused on other things, like my diet, I lost so much weight... doing nothing meant I ate next to nothing too! I looked after my skin, I read trashy mags, I watched trashy tv, I would go for drives with my mum.. I would spend the weekends with Dave ... He would wheel me around the shopping centres of Bendigo.. and we would go for coffee... It was such a nice healing time for me...

I enjoyed all these simple things and let my body's healing powers take care of themselves ! It was really remarkable!
Within 6 weeks of my operation I was off crutches and within 8 weeks I was doing a pump class...  Even I was astounded ....

I realised this was the best thing that has ever happened to me... The changes were remarkable...  I am a huge hip replacement advocate now.... I know in time,  that I will wear this one out... and I know I will need this surgery again some day .. and on the other leg too... I know my legs will go through a whole lot more over their life span... but its not all bad...
I managed to birth Darby naturally a year later, I have managed to walk marathons.. do all the things I have needed to... I have just adapted them to my own abilities... They dont hold me back, nor do they define me....
They are part of who I am and am proud of the journey they have taken me on, I don't know of a life without them being as they are.....  Mostly I am glad that they have left me with the strength and resilience I didn't know existed...
(sorry for the long post!)
Bit too much info - I know.. Java Jane in her undies..
